1 billion euro aid measure from EU to Ukraine for ammunition support

According to a written statement from the European Council, an aid measure worth 1 billion euros was accepted to Ukraine within the scope of the “European Peace Fund”.

Thus, the supply of 155 mm artillery shells to the Ukrainian army and, if requested, missiles to be jointly supplied by the EU member states from the European defense industry will be financed.

Joint supplies of ammunition and missiles will be made through economic operators based in the EU or Norway. Production of ammunition and missiles in the EU or Norway will also be supported.

On the other hand, with this aid, the EU’s total contribution to Ukraine within the scope of the European Peace Fund will increase to 5.6 billion euros.

The decision, adopted on March 20, includes three phases. In the first phase, recorded on 13 April, the Council accepted a financing package of 1 billion euros in order to reimburse the member states for the ammunition they donated to Ukraine through their existing stocks or orders during the 9 February-31 May period.

Secondly, on 3 May, the Commission presented the Ammunition Production Support Law (ASAP) proposal, in which it was announced that 500 million Euros would be financed from the EU budget.

The three-phase measure aims to speed up the delivery and joint supply of member states’ target on 20 March to send 1 million shells to Ukraine by the end of the year.
