According to the statement of Water UK, the umbrella organization of water companies in the UK, the investment amount of 3.1 billion pounds will be tripled in the 2020-2025 period in order to prevent sewage leaks.
Water UK companies said they planned to invest £10bn by 2030 to carry out the biggest modernization of the country’s sewer network since the Victorian era, but apologized for not acting quickly enough to prevent leaks.
With the modernization investments within the scope of the plan, it is anticipated that up to 140,000 sewage leaks will be reduced in the country every year.
According to UK Environment Agency data, there were 372,533 sewer leaks in the country in 2021.
This figure fell to 301,911 with a 19 percent decrease last year due to dry weather conditions.
