11 killed as boat carrying 78 people sank in western Indonesia

Nyoman Sidhakarya, Director of Pekanbaru Search and Rescue Department, announced that they rescued 58 people from the 78 people on the sinking boat.

Sidhakarya noted that the bodies of 11 people were found and 9 people were missing.

Stating that some of the rescued people were unconscious and being treated, Sidhakarya stated that the passengers returned from their holiday visit.

While starting an investigation into the cause of the sinking, eyewitnesses claimed that the boat capsized as a result of hitting a log.

It is feared that the death toll will increase as search and rescue efforts continue.

Boat accidents are common in Indonesia, where maritime transportation is common. In 2018, 167 people died as a result of the sinking of a boat in North Sumatra.
