Expressing his satisfaction with the release of Briere and Phelan, Macron emphasized that they will continue to take the necessary steps for the extradition of the French, who are still imprisoned in Iran.
Briere, 37, was detained in May 2020 for “espionage” and Phelan, 64, was detained in Iran on October 3, 2022 for “violating national security”.
French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Emir Abdullahiyan in Beijing, the capital of China, in April. During the meeting, Colonna called for the immediate release of 6 French citizens imprisoned in Iran.
