US Customs and Border Protection Chief Raul Ortiz Ruiz announced that 7,399 irregular migrants managed to escape from law enforcement officials.
Ruiz pointed out that 26 thousand 382 irregular immigrants were detained at the border in the last 3 days and noted that hundreds of kilograms of drugs were seized on the immigrants.
In a statement on the subject, US Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Majorkas stated that deportation procedures will be implemented as of 12 May for those who do not use legal means to enter the country.
Measures for irregular migrants have been tightened at the southern border as the COVID-19 era authorization to allow the rapid deportation of immigrants in the US expires this week.
Article 42 regulation by the Trump administration
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that it would deploy 1,500 troops to the country’s southern border on May 2 to support internal immigration authorities as Article 42 expires.
The “Article 42” regulation, which constitutes a part of the public health law, which was put into practice by the administration of former President Donald Trump in 2020 due to the “public health” due to the COVID-19 epidemic, was used to deport irregular immigrants who demand humanitarian protection to Mexico by being rejected.
The current Joe Biden administration in the USA had also decided to continue the practice with the promise of designing a “humane asylum system”.
Republicans accuse the Biden administration of failing to take adequate measures on issues such as illegal immigration, human and drug trafficking, and some Democrats accuse Biden of implementing “anti-immigration” policies similar to the Trump era.
According to the information shared by the US Border Patrol, most of the irregular immigrants are deported in less than 2 hours under the law in order to prevent the spread of Kovid-19.
In the US media, it is stated that approximately 7,000 irregular migrants have arrived daily from the country’s southern border in recent days, and this number is expected to increase in the coming weeks.
