The history of social media goes back 50 years. Before social media, communication was established through chat programs in a virtual environment.
The first online chat took place in 1973
David Woolley, who developed the TALKOMATIC program, said “Okay that’s better” in his first message.
TALKOMATIC’s first competitor was “The Source”, which was released in 1979. With the program called mIRC, which was released in the 1980s, online chat experienced its golden age.
EM AY AR Sİ, known by the public as MIRÇ, was used for the first time in Turkey in 1994 at METU. Chat programs sowed the seeds of internet cafe culture in Turkey towards the end of the 90s. ICQ, which was released in the 1990s, so to speak, threw MIRC’s shoes into the check.

Later, AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger programs also made it possible to send files. With the Whatsapp application, online chat has moved to mobile devices, and ushered in the era of social media that will not be blocked.
In addition to social media applications such as Facebook and Instagram, there are applications that allow multiple conversations such as Skype and Zoom.
Although social media is mostly preferred today, TALKOMATIC, which was renewed in 2014, is still used.
