Antibiotic shortage deepens in Germany – Breaking News

At the end of April, the German Ministry of Health announced that there was an inadequacy in the supply of antibiotic syrups used for children, giving the state administrations the opportunity to be more flexible against the drug supply problem and to import antibiotic syrups.

Many states using this facility have temporarily allowed the relevant authorities to import antibiotic syrups that are not approved or registered in the country.

German Pediatricians Association (BVKJ) Spokesperson Jakob Mask said that the shortage of drugs is experienced not only in antibiotic syrups used for children, but also in antibiotics given to adults.

Pediatrician Mask, who has his practice in Berlin’s Schöneberg district, said: “There is an urgent lack of antibiotics in Germany. This is not only in the first option, but also in the second and third (antibiotic) options. Not only for children and young people, but also partially for adults.” used the phrases.

Mask pointed out that antibiotic drugs given intravenously in clinics have also decreased.

“It may be an emergency that we have never experienced before, that needs to be taken seriously”

Stating that relatively good care can be provided in hospitals at the moment, Mask said, “However, this may be an emergency that we have never experienced before and that should be taken seriously.” warned.

“Parents are angry”

Explaining that the parents who took their children to the doctor for treatment were very surprised that there was no medicine at first, Maske said, “They (parents) sometimes have to travel the whole city or the whole region in rural areas to get medicine.” said.

Mask stated that the parents were angry about this situation and asked them to be encouraged to transfer the problem to the relevant institutions.

Explaining that children are sometimes referred to the hospital for treatment, Maske said, “This situation is related to trauma because staying in the hospital is never a good thing for children.” he said.

“There are various reasons for the drug shortage”

Mask stated that there are many reasons for the shortage of antibiotic drugs.

Pointing out that there was a bottleneck in the supply of drugs due to the war in Ukraine, Maske said that for this reason, drugs and in some cases packages could not be delivered on time from China and India.

Mask stated that another reason for this was that health insurance companies wanted to save money, and that these companies did not allocate enough resources for the production of drugs in Germany and European countries.

Explaining that a law will be enacted in Germany in order to eliminate this problem, but it will take a long time to enter into force, Maske said, “This is not a quick solution. The quick fix was delayed by health insurance companies and the Ministry of Health. We’ve been warned about this over and over, and now we’re at the tip of the iceberg. We are faced with a situation where we can no longer treat children, in part because the relevant drugs are not available.” used the phrases.

The mask wanted the drugs to be produced in Germany and European countries and to ensure that reasonable prices were paid.

“The absence of antibiotics and cancer drugs is an alarming signal”

Gerald Gass, President of the German Hospitals Association, told the Radio and Television Corporation SWR and the German Correspondent Network RND that some emergency medicines are not available in hospitals.

Noting that 5 to 10 percent of the drugs needed in hospitals cannot be supplied, Gass said that this problem is seen in antibiotics given to children and drugs used in cases of paralysis.

Gass stated that the unavailability of antibiotics or cancer drugs throughout Germany is an “alarm signal” and said that some pediatricians referred their patients to hospitals because they could not provide outpatient treatment due to lack of medication.

Experts cite cost pressure in the healthcare system as one of the causes of drug shortages.

From a global perspective, the substances used in medicines supplied for the world market are generally produced in China and India for cost reasons. When the production of active ingredient is temporarily suspended in Asia for various reasons, companies in Europe are also affected.

It is also stated that price regulations in Germany, import and export transactions and discount agreements made by health insurance companies with companies may cause bottlenecks in pharmaceuticals.
