Big step for life on the moon: Oxygen production from soil

A team from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston has successfully extracted oxygen from artificial lunar soil in a vacuum environment for the first time, using a high-power laser to create a carbothermal reaction.

The Carbothermal Reduction Demonstration (CaRD) experiment could be vital as a propellant in transportation as well as producing oxygen for respiration.

“Our team has proven that the CaRD reactor can survive and successfully extract oxygen on the Moon’s surface. This is a big step towards improving the architecture for building sustainable human bases on other planets,” said NASA engineer Anastasia Ford. she said.

Establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon is one of the long-term goals of NASA’s Artemis mission, which will enable the first astronauts to return to the lunar surface as early as 2025.

The success of this latest experiment means that oxygen harvesting technology has now reached readiness level 6, ready to be tested in space.
