China’s new Prime Minister, Li Chiang

At the 1st General Assembly of the 14th term of the Chinese National People’s Congress (CNC) in the capital Beijing, President Xi Jinping nominated Li to be prime minister.

Li was elected prime minister by receiving the votes of 2,936 delegates against 3 votes against and 8 abstentions in the general assembly session of the CHUK this morning, in which he was the only candidate.

After the election, President Xi signed the Presidential Decree on the appointment of Li.

Former Prime Minister Li Kiqiang handed over his post after 10 years

Since the term of office of the prime minister is limited to two terms in the Chinese Constitution, Li Kiqiang, who served as prime minister for 10 years in 2013-2018 and 2018-2023, handed over the task to his successor.

Former Prime Minister Li left the 7-member Standing Committee, the party’s top governing body, at the CCP’s 20th National Congress in October 2022.

New Prime Minister Li, on the other hand, was elected to the Standing Committee for the first time at the CCP Congress, rising to the 2nd rank in the party protocol after General Secretary Xi. In the system where there was a single-party government and the party and state administration were intertwined, Li was expected to be appointed as the prime minister, which corresponds to the state protocol of his position in the party.

Born in Rui’en County, Vincou City, Ciciang Province, 63-year-old Li Chiang studied at Cjiang Agricultural University, Ciciang University, and the CCP’s Central Party School. He holds a MBA from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Li joined the CCP in 1983 and served in county, provincial, and provincial party organizations in Ciciang Province. Li, who was the General Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee when President Xi was the Cjiang Party Secretary from 2002-2007, maintained a close working relationship with him.

Li was elected to the CCP Standing Committee in 2022.

Li, who was elected prime minister by the National People’s Congress at the suggestion of the President, will continue his duty for the next 5 years.

Elections were held for military administration and high judicial bodies.

Following the election of the Prime Minister, elections were held in the parliament for the Vice-Presidents and members of the Central Military Commission, the Chairman of the National Audit Commission, the President of the Supreme People’s Court, and the Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme People’s Prosecutor’s Office.

General Cang Youshia and General Hi Veydong from the People’s Liberation Army of China were appointed as vice presidents of the Central Military Commission, where Xi was elected as the chairman for the third time with the presidency yesterday, while General Li Sangfu, General Liu Jinli, Admiral Miao Hua and General Cang Shingmin were appointed as members.

Liu Cinguo was elected as the Chairman of the National Inspection Commission, Cang Cun as the Chairman of the Supreme People’s Court, and Ying Yong as the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.
