In a written statement made by Hussein Ibrahim Taha, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the provocative act was condemned and expressed deep disappointment that the Swedish authorities continued to allow such acts despite the grave consequences of this despicable act.
The statement referred to the statement in the closing statement of the extraordinary meeting of the OIC Executive Board held on July 2, that “such provocative actions are against the spirit of articles 19 and 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and cannot be justified in any way on the pretext of freedom of expression.”
The statement also called on the Swedish authorities “not to allow extremist groups and individuals, so that such dangerous provocative acts are not repeated.”
Salwan Momika of Iraqi origin, who had burned the Qur’an in Sweden before, had insulted the religion of Islam by taking the Qur’an and the Iraqi flag under his feet in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Stockholm yesterday.
