‘Cooperation on global issues’ message from EU and UN

A written statement was made from the European Union (EU) Council regarding the EU Leaders’ Summit session attended by the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Guterres.

According to the statement, the UN and the EU emphasized the importance of cooperation to overcome current urgent global problems.

Underlining their shared commitment to multilateralism, the parties discussed the possibilities of closer cooperation for a peaceful, just and sustainable world.

The parties reaffirmed the full commitment of EU countries to the UN Charter and principles while Russia’s war in Ukraine continued, and called on Russia to withdraw from Ukraine immediately, completely and unconditionally.

The parties discussing the Black Sea Grain Initiative emphasized that it is effective in this regard, along with the EU’s own initiatives on food security.

Commitment from EU and UN to deepen bilateral relations

Discussing the urgency of accelerating carbon emissions reductions and promoting nature-based solutions in the face of the triple crisis of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, the parties urged all stakeholders, particularly major economies, to reconsider and strengthen their identified contributions to COP28.

EU leaders and Guterres called for the reform of multilateral development banks to strengthen their role in addressing global challenges, particularly in the session where they focused on development finance.

Pointing to the urgency of addressing the growing humanitarian funding gap, the parties supported access to new and non-traditional humanitarian donors, including international financial institutions.

EU leaders and the UN Secretary-General committed to continuing to deepen bilateral relations.
