Andrea Papi, 26, went jogging in the Trentino-Alto Adige mountain range.
When he did not return, however, his family was alarmed and informed the police. A search party found Papi’s body overnight.
He had deep wounds to his neck, arms and chest, Italian media reported, and an autopsy concluded he had been attacked by a bear.
Local authorities demanded that the animal be euthanized after the attack, but Italian news agency Ansa announced that the order to execute the bear was suspended.
According to Reuters, the authorities applied to stop the bear attacking a father and his son near the same area in 2020, but the court overturned this decision.
Prosecutors said DNA samples taken after last week’s attack matched a 17-year-old female bear identified as “JJ4”, Reuters reported.
