Death toll rises to 31 in flood disaster that hit Brazil

The death toll is rising in the floods that hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Eduardo Leite, the Governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, said in a statement, “Unfortunately, we have confirmed that the dead bodies of 4 more people have been reached,” and announced that the loss of life in the flood disaster increased to 31.

Leite said, “There are still many people trapped on the roof of their homes and need to be rescued,” adding that hundreds of rescue workers, police and volunteers are continuing their efforts to reach the flood-affected areas in the state where the state of emergency has been declared.

Stating that the rains will continue until Thursday, Brazil’s Independence Day, Leite warned that the situation could worsen.

On the other hand, it was announced that more than 52 thousand residents and 70 towns in the province were affected by the flood, while it was recorded that more than 5 thousand 300 people had to leave their homes.
