According to a written statement from the Egyptian Presidency, Sisi had a telephone conversation with Zelenskiy.
During the meeting, developments in global food security, as well as issues at the field and humanitarian level in Ukraine were discussed.
Stressing that dialogue and diplomatic solution should be given priority, Sisi said that all efforts to accelerate the political solution of the Russia-Ukraine crisis will be supported through negotiations.
Mentioning that many peoples of the world, especially Africa, are suffering from the food crisis, the two discussed the ongoing efforts to extend the grain export agreement.
Importing 80 percent of its annual wheat needs, Egypt is the country that imports the most wheat in the world.
According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, the biggest supplier of Egypt, which imported 13.3 million tons of wheat last year, was Russia with 8.96 million tons.
Grain Corridor Agreement
In addition to making diplomatic initiatives with the two countries (Russia-Ukraine), Turkey also continued its mediation efforts for grain shipments that caused the global food crisis.
In this context, thanks to the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey, the Grain Corridor Agreement was signed in Istanbul on July 22, 2022. The agreement was extended again on November 17, after the 120-day deadline, thanks to President Erdogan’s intense diplomacy.
