EU doubles number of firefighting planes and helicopters

In an interview with a group of news agencies from EU countries, Janez Lenarcic, the member of the EU Commission responsible for crisis management, stated that the planes will be used for fires in member countries and neighboring countries.

Lenarcic said that among the 28 vehicles, there were 10 Canadair firefighting aircraft, 14 light amphibious aircraft and 4 helicopters, and that they expect this summer to be a busy one for firefighters.

Stating that this year was drier compared to previous years, Lenarcic reminded that the combination of unusually dry air and increasing temperatures creates a suitable environment for forest fires.

Lenarcic noted that in addition to the aircraft, more than 400 firefighters will be stationed in Greece, France and Portugal.

Last year was the hottest summer recorded in Europe, with numerous forest fires occurring in many countries such as France, Italy, Greece and Spain during the summer months. Thereupon, the EU Commission decided to strengthen the firefighting fleet.

EU firefighting planes and helicopters are deployed across the continent. The current fleet is currently kept ready in Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
