Explosion at police station in Pakistan: 12 policemen killed

According to the news cited by the Pakistani press on the police and health authorities, it was noted that the explosions in the Pakistan Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTD) building occurred in the ammunition depot.

Police officials, speaking to local sources, stated that the police station was completely destroyed by the violence of the explosion and that at least 12 policemen were killed and more than 60 people were injured, according to the first determinations.

While the explosion that took place around 8.20 pm local time was described as a “suicide attack” in the first place, CTD Chief Şevket Abbas said, “According to our initial investigation, we have determined that it was not a suicide or bomb attack.”

Abbas stated that the incident may have been caused by explosions in the ammunition depot.

Halit Sohail, one of the CTD officials, said that a suicide attack was a remote possibility as the explosions took place inside the building.

“At the moment, we have no evidence to suggest that a suicide bomber reached the site of the explosion and detonated himself,” Sohail said.

Stating that the investigation into the incident is continuing, Sohail added that the building where the explosion took place was completely destroyed and some buildings in the vicinity were damaged.

Authorities state that some of the injured in the incident are in serious condition and the death toll may increase.

After the explosion, the local press declared that the incident was a suicide attack, based on some police sources.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the incident, saying, “Our nation is in mourning for our martyred police officers.” He had promised to “exterminate terrorism,” using the phrase.
