Prime Minister Kishida participated in the activity of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidate in Wakayama, where he went for the local council by-election campaign.
Kishida met with the LDP candidate at around 11:30 local time, near the Saikazaki Fishing Port in the region, to discuss the campaign process.
Before the Japanese Prime Minister gave his speech, an explosion sound was heard at the point where he was. It was reported that Kishida was evacuated from the scene without injury.
Local media speculated that the sound of the explosion could be some sort of smoke-like smoke bomb thrown at Kishida’s location.
