In the US, the Senate approved the appointment of Choudhury, a Muslim of Bangladeshi descent, nominated by President Joe Biden, as a judge in the Federal Court for the Eastern District of New York.
Choudhury’s appointment passed the Senate by a vote of 50 to 49. According to the reports in the American press, Choudhury was recorded as “the first Muslim female federal judge” in the USA.
Of the Democratic Senators, only Joe Manchin voted “no”.
Biden nominated Choudhury, 47, a Columbia University graduate, in January.
Federal judges in the United States serve for life unless they are impeached.
