G7 Leaders tour Shinto shrine in Hiroshima

The G7 Leaders’ Summit continues in Hiroshima, southwestern Japan.

The leaders of the USA, France, England, Germany, Canada, Italy and the European Union (EU) attend the summit hosted by Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.

As part of the previously announced program, the leaders traveled to Miyajima in Hiroshima Bay, which is known as the “temple island” in the country. The leaders visited the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, on the island.

Conversing in the courtyard, the leaders received information about the historical and cultural characteristics of the region from the temple attendant and attended the cultural “Gagaku” music concert.

The leaders, who took a souvenir photo in front of the temple, then met for a working dinner at the Japanese hotel in the Iwaso region, where the traditional hot spring is located.

The “Itsukushima Temple”, which is considered an example of medieval Japanese architecture, and the red “Torii gate” in front of it are among the most important touristic centers of the country.

The Torii gate, which has a floating appearance in the water, is one of the national symbols of Japan and is considered the transition between the two worlds in Shinto belief.

The summit will end on May 21.
