German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a joint press conference after meeting with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer in Salzburg, Austria.
Stating that Germany is in favor of the further development of the European Union (EU), Scholz said, “This includes, of course, the ability of EU member states to join the Schengen Area. Scholz noted that a major step has been taken in this regard, with the EU Interior Ministers reaching a consensus on the reform of the asylum system, and stated that this issue will be concluded before the end of the legislative period of the negotiations that started with the European Parliament.
Prime Minister Scholz stated that due to the increasing number of irregular migrants arriving in his country, controls at the German-Austrian border are necessary.
Austrian Prime Minister Nehammer also stated that they wanted to act with Germany on the issue of irregular migrants and expressed that they agreed with Scholz that the external borders of the EU should be protected effectively.
The two prime ministers noted that they would develop cooperation in the field of energy between Germany and Austria.
