US President Biden spoke about his work to prevent armed violence in the program held in Los Angeles, California, where the mass shooting took place in January.
Commemorating those who lost their lives in the shooting that took place during the Lunar New Year celebrations on the evening of January 21 in Monterey Park, about 10 kilometers east of Los Angeles city, Biden described the attack as “one of the worst mass murders in California history”.
Biden drew attention to the fact that the attack took place in the region where Asian Americans live heavily and that hate crimes against Asians increased after the COVID-19 epidemic.

On the other hand, Biden reminded that the production, which tells the struggle of an Asian American immigrant family, won an award at the 95th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscar Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the cinema world.
Announcing that he signed a new decree to prevent such attacks, Biden stated that he called on the Congress to carry out a comprehensive criminal record check for the sale of weapons and to eliminate the liability exemption for manufacturers.

Biden underlined that many checks should be made, such as whether people have committed domestic violence before purchasing a gun, and said that they will expand awareness-raising campaigns among the society in this context.

Noting that the fiscal budget for 2024, which he presented to Congress last week, includes access to mental health services for a safer society and financial contributions to those affected by violence, Biden emphasized that Republicans in Congress should pass the budget instead of cutting the funding of institutions such as law enforcement and the FBI.
