Army Spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu stated that the army is conducting operations against smugglers in the Delta province in the south of the country.
Nwachukwu reported that 8 illegal facilities used for illegal refining of stolen crude oil were destroyed in the operation.
Noting that 14 warehouses containing 200 thousand liters of crude oil and 90 thousand liters of diesel fuel were destroyed in the operation, Nwachukwu noted that the suspects in the area fled during the operation.
Nigeria is the 8th country with the most oil reserves in the world.
More than 200 illegal oil refineries operate in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s identified oil reserves are about 37 billion barrels, making up 3.1 percent of the world’s reserves.
Nigeria, which is among the top 15 countries in the world in crude oil production, ranks 8th in the world with the highest oil reserves and 6th in terms of oil exports.
In the Delta region, where the oil fields are located, sabotage of the oil fields by armed groups, clashes and kidnappings are taking place.
