The Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (IKRG) Mine Authority General Manager Cabbar Mustafa Resul also participated in the mine detonation activity in the Dukan district of the city of Sulaymaniyah.
Resul said that there are mines from the war period in Dukan district, just like in other KRG regions.
Resul, who stated that the controlled mine detonation activity was carried out successfully, stated that an area of 12 square kilometers in total in Dukan is covered with mines. He noted that this area decreased to 5.5 square kilometers after the demining activities.
Noting that other areas will be cleaned as well, Resul said:
“Because of the mines in Dukan, some citizens cannot go to their fields and vineyards. Most of the mines in the region remained during the 8-year war between Iran and Iraq. With the controlled removal of 313 mines from the region (today), unwanted incidents were also prevented. So far, 400 people in the Dukan region have died and injured from these mines.”
