34 people died in forest fires in Algeria
The Algerian Interior Ministry announced that the number of people who lost their lives in forest fires in 11 cities of the country increased to 34. In the statement, it was emphasized that the fire extinguishing works continued by air and land.
Fighting the forest fires that started yesterday in the northern cities of Algeria is becoming increasingly difficult with the effect of heat waves exceeding 48 degrees and hot winds.
The Meteorology Institute raised the alarm level for the heat wave from orange to red yesterday and noted that there were severe climatic conditions in the country where the air temperature exceeded 48 degrees.
Algerian authorities had reported that the state of high alert had been activated, fearing that the heatwave, which had been going on for weeks, could cause forest fires.
The country has been witnessing record temperatures of 48 degrees in the capital and 50 degrees in other regions for about a month.
