‘Joint Sword’ exercise from China around Taiwan

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PRC) Eastern Front Command announced that the military exercise, called “Joint Sword”, “aims for the Chinese armed forces to take control of the sea, air and information by simultaneously encircling the island and putting pressure on it from all directions.”

Command spokesman Colonel Xi Yi said the exercise will continue until Monday, adding: “This is a serious warning against separatist forces defending Taiwan’s independence and their complicit provocations with foreign powers.” used the phrase.

Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced that 71 aircraft and 9 warships belonging to China were seen around the island from midnight last night until today evening.

In the statement of the Ministry, it was stated that 45 of 71 aircraft crossed the air and sea line, which is assumed to limit the areas of influence of the parties in the Taiwan Strait, from the north, central and south, and flew in the area that Taiwan declared “Air Defense Identification Zone” (ADIZ).

It is reported that during the exercise, the CHKO’s rocket batteries attached to the land forces, navy destroyers, frigates and missile ships and land-based anti-ship missile systems, air force fighter jets, early warning and tanker aircraft, and guided missile systems attached to the rocket forces took part.

The Maritime Security Administration of Fucien Province, located on the opposite coast of Taiwan, announced that a military exercise using real weapons and ammunition would be held off the coast of Fucou city in the north of the Taiwan Strait at 08:00-12:00 local time.

While it was stated in the announcement that the exercises would be repeated on April 11, 13, 15, 17 and 20, it was requested that all civilian and commercial ships not enter the region on the aforementioned dates. In addition to the series of exercises to be held near the Matsu Islands, which are controlled by Taiwan, it was reported that on April 10, exercises with real weapons and ammunition would be held around the Chinese-controlled Pingtan Island.

Tsai’s visits

Tsai, the leader of Taiwan, which is in a sovereignty conflict with China, made unofficial visits to the USA on the grounds of “transit transit” before and after his visits to Central American countries Guatemala and Belize.

The Taiwan leader attended the meeting organized by the Hudson Institute in New York City on March 30, and met with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy and the cross-party Congressional delegation in Simi Valley, California, on April 5.

The Beijing administration announced that it would impose sanctions on two organizations and their executives who mediated Tsai’s contacts while protesting the United States for his visit.

Pelosi’s visit also caused a crisis

Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August 2022, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, caused a crisis between Washington and Beijing. While the Chinese army held military exercises that created a de facto blockade around the island after the visit, the guided missiles fired from the mainland of China fell into the waters near Taiwan during the exercises in which real weapons and ammunition were used.

After the visit, China increased its aircraft and ship patrols around Taiwan and made regular flights where it crossed the nominal “middle line” that separates the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan, which China defends as part of its territory, has enjoyed de facto independence since 1949 when the People’s Republic of China was founded. The separation that emerged after the civil war between mainland China and Taiwan still continues.

Beijing, emphasizing the principle of “One China”, opposes Taiwan’s establishing independent diplomatic relations with the countries of the world, its representation in the United Nations and other international organizations, and stipulates that the countries that recognize it should break diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
