According to the news in the French press, 37-year-old Briere was detained in May 2020 for “espionage”, and 64-year-old Phelan was detained in Iran on October 3, 2022 for “violating national security”.
French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Emir Abdullahiyan in April in Beijing, the capital of China. During the meeting, Colonna called for the immediate release of 6 French citizens imprisoned in Iran.
