Macron argues he has to pass controversial pension reform even if he doesn’t want to

Macron gave a speech to French television about the controversial pension reform, which caused mass strikes in the country, was passed by the government without a vote in parliament and included extending the retirement age by 2 years.

Stating that the reform is among the most important election promises, Macron stated that he wants it to come into effect by the end of this year.

Emmanuel Macron pointed out that the pension reform will be implemented in the determined democratic calendar.

Reminding that he took the reform to the Constitutional Council to withdraw the opposition, Macron said, “Now we have to wait for the decision of the Constitutional Council. At the end of this decision, I will publish a text that will clarify some things.”

Commenting that France is an old nation that legitimately elects its rulers, Macron said, “The unions also have legitimacy, they have shown that they are against this reform with their demonstrations. I respect them. But this reform is necessary. I also say to the French, it makes me happy (to pass the reform).” “It doesn’t. I would prefer not to. But I had to.”

Macron argued that “reform is necessary” to balance pension contributions with budgetary support.

“When I entered the working life, there were 10 million retirees, today it is 17 million. It will be 20 million in the 2030s,” said the French President, and evaluated that not all of the anger in the streets is related to the extension of the retirement age, and some of it is related to the injustice in the working order.

Emmanuel Macron said, “I chose the general interests of the country, among the general interests of the country, with the polls. And if my popularity is falling behind this, I approve it (reform)”.

Pointing out that it is necessary for high-earning companies to share some of their earnings with their employees, Macron mentioned that for the income balance, the country has increased the minimum wage by 9.5 percent, above the inflation rate, in the last 18 months.

President Macron interpreted Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne’s preference for the reform to be adopted directly by activating the 3rd paragraph of Article 49 of the Constitution instead of voting it in the parliament, as “he assumed his responsibility”.

The French President argued that the lack of a quorum in the motion of no confidence against his government should be perceived as the government’s implementation of the majority’s decision.

“We will not tolerate any outrage,” said Macron.

Noting that his government will continue with reforms, Macron added that their goal is to complete the law on irregular migration soon.
