NATO: Our troop deployment in Finland depends on this country’s own decision

Stoltenberg spoke to reporters before the meeting of Foreign Ministers held at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Drawing attention to the historic feature of today, due to the 74th anniversary of the founding of the Alliance and Finland’s 31st membership in NATO, Stoltenberg stated that the meeting was held at a critical time when Russia was resolutely continuing the war.

Stoltenberg said the ministers will discuss at the meeting issues related to the planning of longer-term requirements for Ukraine to have NATO-standard equipment as well as its immediate needs.

Stating that the security challenges in the Middle East and North Africa will be discussed at the meeting, Stoltenberg stated that they will also discuss the importance of developing cooperation with partners in the Asia Pacific region, such as Japan, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand, against China and Russia, which are getting closer to each other. .

Finland’s membership and NATO military presence

When asked about his personal thoughts on Finland’s membership, Stoltenberg made the following comments:

“I am also happy to be Norwegian. I have been working with Finnish and Finnish politicians for many years. Until recently, we did not think this was possible. So it is truly historical. I believe that Finland is a sovereign, independent, self-determining state and NATO is democratic and It shows that it supports sovereign states with an open door policy.”

Reminding Russia’s comments to increase its presence around Finland, Stoltenberg said that Russia has been doing this for years, and that NATO is constantly reviewing its stance and presence in this region, conducting more exercises and increasing its presence.

When asked about whether NATO will deploy troops in Finland, Stoltenberg said, “This is a decision for Finland to make. Of course, we do not deploy NATO soldiers without the consent of the country. We conduct naval, air and land exercises in many countries where we do not have permanent bases. The issue was not addressed.” said.

nuclear weapons issue

Reiterating that he finds Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear rhetoric dangerous and irresponsible, Stoltenberg said, “We have not seen any development in Russia’s nuclear stance that would require a change in our stance, but we remain vigilant and closely monitor what they are doing.” said.
