The movie, starring Tom Hanks and portraying a man who is left on a deserted island, became reality off the coast of Mexico.
Sydney resident Tim Shaddock, 51, and his dog Bella left Mexico in April for French Polynesia.
Shaddock sailed more than 6,000 kilometers from La Paz, Mexico, but soon began to drift in the North Pacific ocean after his ship’s electronics were cut off by bad weather.
The man and his dog, who survived for two months by eating raw fish and drinking rainwater, were rescued by boat near the area after a helicopter spotted them.
“I went through a very tough test at sea. I just need rest and good food because I’ve been alone at sea for a long time. Other than that, I’m in very good health,” the man told 9News. said.
Shaddock said the fishing gear helped him survive.
He also managed to avoid sunburn by taking shelter under the awning of his boat.
