The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) announced the number of students who committed suicide in 2022.
According to MEXT data, the number of students who committed suicide across the country last year increased by 39 compared to the previous year to 512.
Accordingly, the rate in 2022 drew attention as the highest rate after 1980, when comparable data were recorded.
In 2022, 17 elementary, 143 middle and 352 high school students committed suicide in Japan.
Student suicide rates were the highest for the year, with 60 in June and 57 in September.
