United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, in a written statement, announced that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, will cease its operations tomorrow.
Expressing his regret for closing his offices in Uganda that have been operating for 18 years, Türk noted that although great progress has been made in this process in Uganda, serious problems regarding human rights continue.
While noting his concerns about the humanitarian situation in Uganda before the general elections to be held in 2026, Turk called on the government to ensure that the “national human rights institution”, the main body for human rights oversight in Uganda, can function effectively and independently.
