Pashinyan: Armenia and Azerbaijan recognize each other’s territorial integrity

Speaking at the European Council Summit in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, Pashinyan said, “Three days ago, we took another step forward under the mediation of the President of the European Council, and Armenia’s territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within 86 thousand 600 square meters, Azerbaijan’s Armenia. We underlined that Turkey recognizes its territorial integrity within 29,800 square meters,” he said.

Thus, Karabakh, which came under the control of Azerbaijan as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, was officially accepted by Armenia as Azerbaijan’s territory.

Reminding that on October 6, 2022, with the support of French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Charles Michel, they reached an agreement with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the improvement of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations on the basis of the 1991 Almaty Declaration, Pashinyan said that the aforementioned declaration will be a part of Soviet Armenia and Soviet Azerbaijan. He stated that he envisaged the administrative borders as state borders.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mariya Zakharova announced that Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov and her Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan will hold talks on a peace agreement in Moscow on Friday, 19 May.

Zakharova noted that on the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will hold a trilateral meeting with his Azeri and Armenian counterparts.


“Normalization process is beneficial and result oriented”

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Brussels was “beneficial and result-oriented in terms of advancing the normalization process between the two countries”.

Aliyev, Pashinyan and Michel had met in Brussels. After the meeting, Michel stated that the parties confirmed that they respect each other’s territorial integrity.

Michel also noted that the parties had made clear progress in removing barriers to transport and economic connections in the region.
