Zelenskiy, who came to the Italian capital for the first time after Russia’s war against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, met with Italian President Mattarella for the first time.
After Mattarella welcomed Zelenskiy with an official ceremony at the presidential palace, Quirinale, the meeting started.
President Mattarella told Zelenskiy at the beginning of the meeting, “It is my honor to host you here. Italy is with you fully with support.” said.
According to the information obtained from the sources of the Presidency of Italy, Mattarella reiterated her full support to Zelenskiy, and Zelenskiy thanked Italy for the support given to Ukraine.
It was stated that the two leaders discussed the effectiveness of the economic sanctions against Russia, the situation of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, the fight against fake news across Europe, the bombing of civilian structures and the abduction of Ukrainian children, the restructuring of Ukraine, the entry of Ukraine into the European Union (EU). .
Zelenskiy then went to the prime minister’s palace, Chigi, where he met with the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Prime Minister Meloni welcomed Zelensky with an official ceremony in the courtyard of the prime minister’s office. During the welcome, Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s full 360-degree support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and independence.
The two leaders are expected to make a joint press statement after their tete-a-tete and between delegations meetings.
In the afternoon, Zelenskiy will travel to the Vatican City State, which is adjacent to Rome, to meet with Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the Catholics and Head of the Vatican State.
