The situation in Idlib
At the Astana meeting in 2017, Turkey, Russia and Iran decided to create 4 “de-escalation zones” in the area not under the control of the Syrian administration.
Damascus administration, Iran-backed terrorists and Russia continued their attacks, seizing 3 of the 4 regions and heading towards Idlib.
Although Turkey reached an additional agreement to strengthen the ceasefire with Russia in September 2018, the attacks intensified again in May 2019. After the new agreement between Turkey and Russia on March 5, 2020, the ceasefire is largely preserved.
Approximately 2 million civilians fleeing the attacks in 2017-2020 had to migrate to areas close to the Turkish border.
