Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi evaluated the latest situation in the fight against the Ansar’us Sunna organization operating in the Cabo Delgado region, in a statement to the press.
Nyusi announced that as a result of the operations carried out, Ömer, who was stated to be the so-called leader of the organization, was neutralized.
Noting that Ömer and some members of the organization with him were killed, Nyusi gave the message that they will continue the fight against terrorism.
Attacks continue since 2017
In the Cabo Delgado region of Mozambique, nearly 4,000 people have lost their lives since 2017 in the attacks of the terrorist organization Ansar’us Sunna on civilians. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced due to the attacks.
After the organization seized strategic points in the region where natural gas and precious metals are located, foreign mercenaries and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission began to fight against terrorism.
As part of the SADC mission, hundreds of soldiers from Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia are serving in the country. Rwanda also supports the fight against terrorism with its special units.
