Christophe Bechu, Minister of Ecological Transition of France, said that the country “cannot allow people to fill their pools while the East Pyrenees region is suffering from water shortages” and said, “Based on what is happening in nature and the situation we are in, people will have to get used to the idea of a global.”
Bechu said the decision is part of new crisis measures that came into effect on May 10.
According to regional governor Rodrigue Furcy, much of southern France is experiencing its driest season since 1959.
Water-saving measures currently in place in France include prohibiting people from watering their lawns and flowers or washing their cars.
