A police official and a senior government official said a teenager shot and injured his mother in an Alberta flat in the early hours.
Two patrol officers who arrived at the scene at around 12:47 p.m. were shot dead.
There was no indication that officers were firing. Edmonton Police Dale McFee said the gunman later died by shooting himself.
McFee identified the deceased officers as Travis Jordan, 35, who had worked with the Edmonton forces for eight and a half years, and Brett Ryan, 30, who had been an officer for five and a half years.
The condition of a woman who was taken to the hospital is serious but stable.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau conveyed his condolences to the relatives and colleagues of the police in a post on his Twitter account.
“Police officers put themselves in danger every day to keep people safe. The news that two Edmonton cops were killed in the line of duty reminds us of that fact.” said.
