The escape of 40-year-old Uss, who broke his electronic shackles on 22 March from the house arrest he has been held near Milan since last November, on charges of money laundering, violating the sanctions and arms smuggling, sparked the debate in Italy regarding this incident.
While the opposition parties Democratic Party (PD) and More Europe (+Europa) demanded an explanation from the government on how Uss escaped, Prime Minister Meloni told the Italian press during his visit to Ethiopia, “Of course, what happened is very serious. There are definitely anomalies. In my opinion, the main anomaly is the decision of the Court of Appeal to continue the decision to keep the person under house arrest.” used the phrases.
While Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio decided to initiate an investigation against the judges who decided to keep Uss under house arrest, the Milan Court of Appeal stated that the Ministry of Justice’s decision to remain in prison was overturned and placed under house arrest because the US extradition request was not sent to them in a timely manner.
Artem Uss was arrested due to an international arrest warrant
Businessman Artem Uss, the son of the governor of the Krasnoyarsk region of Russia, was arrested in Italy in October 2022 due to an international arrest warrant.
Evaluating the objection to Uss’s detention, the Milan Court of Appeal decided on November 25 that the Russian businessman be kept under house arrest with electronic shackles.
Artem Uss escaped from house arrest by breaking electronic shackles on March 22, one day after the Milan court approved his extradition to the United States. Italian authorities realized that Uss had escaped when the signals from the electronic shackles were cut off.
The Italian press wrote that the Russian secret service helped Uss escape.
In the Repubblica newspaper, it was reported that the USA had previously warned the Italian Ministry of Justice that Uss could escape.
Russian news agency RIA Novosti wrote last week that Uss was in Russia.
