The National Institute for Population and Security Studies under the Ministry of Health has renewed its population forecast for the future of the country.
According to the new estimate, Japan’s total population of 126.1 million in 2020 will fall below 100 million in 2056. The total population in 2020 will decrease by 30 percent to 87 million in 2070.
The rate of foreigners, including students and workers, who reside in the country for more than 3 months, will increase from 2.2 percent in 2020 to 10.8 percent in 2070.
According to the estimation, the annual number of newborns, which will decrease below 800 thousand in 2022, will decrease below 700 thousand in 2043 and below 500 thousand in 2070.
The population aged 15-64, which is considered to keep Japan’s social security system alive, was recorded as 75 million in 2020.
According to the estimation of the institute, this segment of 75 million people in 2020 will decrease to 45.3 million in 2070.
