UN coordinated largest search and rescue operation in Turkey’s earthquakes history

Rajasingham made evaluations about the UN-coordinated search and rescue operations after the Kahramanmaraş-based earthquakes.

Regarding the search and rescue efforts in Turkey, “This was by far the largest international search and rescue operation coordinated by the UN. Only 49 teams from dozens of member countries were deployed under the umbrella of the UN International Search and Rescue Advisory Group and the UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination mechanism.” Using his statements, Rajasingham said that the teams went to earthquake areas with equipment, dogs and rescue professionals.

Rajasingham stated that the search and rescue teams coming to Turkey from 38 different countries were coordinated by the UN and these teams voluntarily participated in the post-earthquake work.

Expressing that the UN-coordinated teams are involved in the search and rescue efforts of the Turks, Rajasingham said, “In total, INSARAG teams saved around 300 lives. This is the highest number of people we have saved in international search and rescue operations.” used the phrase.

Rajasingham drew attention to the fact that the earthquake occurred in a very wide area and therefore they faced many difficulties during the works.

Pointing out that the roads and routes were damaged due to the severe earthquake, Rajasingham emphasized that the earthquake took place in the middle of winter and during a period of cold weather and this made operations difficult.

Rajasingham noted that many people who responded to the emergency, including Turkish and foreign UN personnel, were directly affected by the earthquakes and some lost their lives.

Stating that many buildings were damaged or destroyed in the earthquake area, Rajasingham said that the UN office was also affected by the earthquake.

Noting that the aftershocks also caused trauma to the people living in the region, Rajasingham said that there are difficulties in working in such an environment.

“I must say that AFAD is the leader in search and rescue”

Pointing out that the UN-led search and rescue teams work very closely with the Turkish authorities, Rajasingham said, “I must say that the Turkish authorities, AFAD is the leader in search and rescue. They (AFAD) are also part of the INSARAG group. We have cooperated with them for many years. I, the border I worked very closely with AFAD when I stayed in Gaziantep for 2 years for transnational operations so the cooperation (during the studies) was truly outstanding and AFAD did a great job in the first response. Turkish officials have been great at leadership and making space for other teams to work effectively. It’s working.” used the phrases.

Reminding that many emergency medical teams came to earthquake areas, Rajasingham mentioned that these teams helped injured people under the coordination of the World Health Organization (WHO) and worked well to save lives.

Referring to the statements of the Turkish authorities, Rajasingham pointed out the importance of meeting the needs of these people, especially shelter, while pointing out that more than 200,000 buildings in different cities were destroyed or damaged in the earthquakes, and hundreds of thousands of families were left homeless.

Stating that they manage 49 search and rescue teams from different countries in coordination with the UNDAC mechanism, Rajasingham stated that they assigned 50 people to the earthquake zone in this context.

Rajasingham explained that they use UNDAC in disaster situations around the world and that the members of this team come from various countries under the UN.

“I think it’s time to be generous towards Turkey”

Rajasingham, “The UN launched an emergency aid call worth 1 billion dollars for Turkey after the earthquakes. What is the latest situation in this regard?” Recalling Turkey’s prominent role in humanitarian issues and supporting those in need, he continued as follows:

“I think it’s time to be generous towards Turkey. The people of Turkey are facing a catastrophe, this is a very tragic situation. That’s why we invite donors from all over the world to contribute as generously as possible to the call for help to Turkey.”

Noting that a big event will be held in Brussels this month that will bring together donors for the UN calls for help issued due to the earthquake, Rajasingham stated that they hope to receive very generous commitments from the member states at this event.
