Venezuelan President Maduro visits Brazil after 8 years

Maduro, who came to the country after 8 years at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was welcomed by his counterpart at the Presidential Palace Planalto.

The two leaders made evaluations at the press conference after the tete-a-tete meeting and between the delegations.

Expressing his pleasure to be in Brazil, Maduro said that an extremist model is being applied to his country by right-wing ideologies and that all doors in Brazil are closed to their governments.

Stating that his doors are open to Brazilian businessmen and companies, Maduro said, “I hope no one will close the doors between Brazil and Venezuela again.” used the phrase.

Pointing out the importance of Latin American unity, Maduro said, “The peoples of South America have been denied for centuries, so we are working for a new global geopolitical system in which Latin American unity reigns as one people.” he said.

Stating that Venezuela is in favor of being included in the BRICS group formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Lula said, “We will discuss this soon and we need to evaluate various integration requests.” said.

“I don’t understand why you accept a dishonest person as head of state”

Emphasizing that the US, European Union (EU) and Latin American countries found the decision to recognize former opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president in Venezuela “absurd”, Lula said, “I told the Europeans who fully implement democracy in Europe that they do not accept a dishonest person as a head of state. I don’t understand what you do.” used the phrase.

4 agreements signed

It was shared that many high-level officials, including Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, attended the meeting between delegations.

Four agreements were signed between the two countries for cooperation in the fields of science, technology, agriculture, transportation, energy, aquaculture, fisheries, tourism and culture.

Relations deteriorated under Bolsonaro

The far-right ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, who took office in Brazil in 2018, banned Maduro from entering the country with a decree he issued in 2019 and froze diplomatic relations with Venezuela by closing the Brazilian embassy in Caracas.

Bolsanoro later decided to recognize former opposition leader Guaido as the legitimate leader of Venezuela.

Lula da Silva, who won the presidential election in Brazil, canceled this decision after he took over on January 1, 2023.

The new Ambassador of Venezuela to Brasilia, Manuel Vicente Vadell, presented his letter of credence to Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
