According to the news of the Medical Press, researchers from the Laureate Brain Research Institute (LIBR) in the USA have developed a new technique to study the communication of the gut and brain without disturbing the integrity of the body.
Accordingly, 40 healthy participants between the ages of 18-40, Vibrant Ltd. swallowed a mechanical capsule with “normal” and “increased” vibration levels developed by his company.
The neural feedbacks given from the parietal and occipital lobes of the brain by vibration of the capsule, whose location was determined by abdominal X-ray, were examined.
It was observed that the amplitude of the neural feedbacks called “stomach evoked potentials”, the intensity of the vibration and the reaction times of the participants increased proportionally.
“It can change the clinical approach”
Research co-author Dr. Sahib Khalsa said, “The possible clinical applications of the results of this study are remarkable. The vibrating capsule method may change the clinical approach to eating disorders related to the brain-gut connection and some gastrointestinal system disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia.” made the statement.
Khalsa stated that the capsule, which facilitates the observation of bowel movements, helps to understand the basics of brain-intestinal interaction and makes it possible to plan personalized and effective treatment strategies.
Regarding the Khalsa capsule, “It increases the possibilities of detecting the perceptual and biological means of successful therapy.” made its assessment.
In current practices, a balloon or medical probe is surgically placed in the throat, stomach, colon or rectum to measure gastrointestinal perception, but it is unethical to use these methods for scientific research.
The results of the research were published in the journal “Nature Communications”.
