Vo Van Thuong elected President of Vietnam

The successor of Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who resigned from the post of President in the Southeast Asian country Vietnam in January, has been announced.

According to national media reports, the Vietnamese National Assembly in the capital Hanoi met in an extraordinary session.

Vo Van Thuong, candidate of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was elected the country’s new President in the parliamentary vote.

Speaking here, Thuong pledged that “the Socialist Republic of Vietnam will remain fully loyal to its country, its people and its Constitution.”

Thuong is also recognized as the youngest of the 16-member Politburo, recognized as the highest decision-maker in Vietnam.

Thuong, 52, was born in the Vinh Long region in the south of the country and holds a master’s degree in philosophy.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who assumed the Prime Ministry in 2016-2021, served as President from April 2021 to January 2023.

According to the Nikkei Asia media outlet, in Vietnam, with a population of close to 100 million, the Presidency is largely considered a ceremonial position.
