Washington will soon send 100 to 200 troops to Taiwan, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed officials.
The personnel will be tasked with training the Taiwanese military against what has been described as a “rising threat from China”.
According to the WSJ, this deployment will quadruple the US military presence in Taiwan.
According to the Pentagon’s Defense Manpower Data Center, there were 23 American soldiers in Taiwan by the fall of 2022.
These Americans act as advisers and instructors of US weapons and equipment sent to Taipei.
Taiwanese soldiers are also training in the north with the Michigan National Guard as “a delegation”, according to the WSJ.
In the Wall Street Journal’s request for comment, the Pentagon said, “The US commitment to Taiwan is unconditional. We have no comment on special operations, events or training, but our support and defense relationship with Taiwan is aligned against the current threat posed by the People’s Republic of China. case,” he replied.
